Kettle hat with cheek pads, 1.6 mm steel - 1

Kettle hat with cheek pads, 1.6 mm steel

€170.00
Availability: 10 In Stock

The kettle hat or war hat, a fairly simple helmet in the shape of a brim hat, came into vogue in the 13th century and enjoyed great popularity among foot soldiers, archers, crossbowmen, pikemen, and men-at-arms throughout Europe until the 15th century. It owes its name to its resemblance to a pot (originally called a kettle).
Although kettle hats existed in many variations, they all shared the same main feature: a wide brim that offered protection against downward sword blows and projectiles fired or dropped from above, without impairing the wearer's vision, hearing, or breathing. This design proved useful during sieges and massed infantry battles and contributed primarily to the enduring prevalence of this type of helmet. The so-called sallet developed from the kettle hat in the fifteenth century.

This reconstruction of a late medieval kettle hat is made of 1.6 mm steel (16 gauge). The edge of the flap is wrapped all the way around and four bands or plates (in German called Spangen) are arranged decoratively in the shape of a cross on the helmet bowl. In the overlapping areas, the thickness of the material is more than 5 mm. Dark brown leather straps with aged brass buckle are riveted to the two cheek guards.

The interior is blackened for better corrosion resistance. It is equipped with an adjustable padded lining made of high-quality black fabric and fastened with rivets.

Suitable for light combat staging, LARP, stage or TV/film, this wearable helmet is best suited for late medieval scenarios and ideal for completing the armour of a European warrior. Of course, it will also be a great addition to any helmet collector's treasure chamber.

German Bascinet, medieval helmet with hinged visor, ca. 1370, steel

2 mm bascinet appeared in the early 14th century. It evolved from the so-called cervelliere or secret helmet (a simple skull hat) and remained a popular helmet until the 15th century throughout Central Europe.

The late Middle Ages, battle-ready helmet with visor that we offer here is a replica of an original bascinet from the 14th century (ca. 1370 AD) that is on display for people to admire at the German Historical Museum (Deutsches Historisches Museum or DHM) in Berlin, Germany.

It is made of 2mm steel and equipped with a riveted face shield that is hinged into a single point in the center of the eyebrow. Especially in the 14th century. Germany and northern Italy, this particular type of center-hinged visor has enjoyed great popularity. The visor has an eye slit approximately 16 cm long and 1 cm wide, as well as several round cutouts on the right side for proper ventilation. The sides and lower edge of the helmet bowl are studded with so-called vervelles that allow the addition of a chainmail, aventail or camail (not included).

The blacked-out interior is equipped with an adjustable lining made of thcik cotton fabric and attached to the edge of the bowl with sturdy stitches. The 2 mm thick leather chin strap is adjustable and closes with a brass buckle. The helmet is also equipped with another leather strap to secure the klappvisor when in the lowered position.

This slim and fully wearable knight helmet will make your transformation into a proud knight simply seamless. Of course, it will also make a great decorative addition to any helmet collector's treasure chamber.

Looking for a high-quality yet affordable medieval helmet suitable for combat reenactment? Well, it looks like your search is over! This rugged handmade helmet, based on a historic piece, offers great value for money. Plus, its authentic appearance and elegant simplicity are sure to turn heads!

The barbute or barbuta, a specialized form of the celata or sallet, is derived from the earlier bascinet. This helmet without a visor of Italian origin was most popular in northern Italy in the 14th and 15th centuries, but it was also used throughout Europe.
The barbute offered good protection for the head and face without excessively restricting vision and breathing. The rounded bowl of the helmet covered the head and neck almost completely, and often featured an upper crest or low crest that ran from the forehead to the nape of the neck. A defining feature of this type of helmet was the forward extension from the sides towards the front, which protected the sides of the wearer's face below the eyes. Another main distinguishing feature was the T- or Y-shaped opening of the face.

The authentic, battle-ready SPQR reconstruction we offer here is based on the helmet of the famous Milanese Avant armour  that is on display for people to admire at the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow, Scotland. This late medieval armor, one of the oldest almost fully preserved armor of its kind in Europe, is dated to about 1440-1445. It was created in Milan (one of the most productive cities for the manufacture of armor and weapons of the European Middle Ages) for a member of the noble von Matsch family of the Castle of Churburg (Castel Chur) in South Tyrol, Italy.

Our barbute with T-shaped opening and center ridge from front to back is handmade with approx. 2 mm steel. The opening and bottom edge are reinforced and the interior is blackened for better corrosion resistance. The riveted suspension lining made of leather ensures a comfortable fit and good wearing comfort, and the sturdy, adjustable chin strap with historic brass buckle provides a secure hold.

Suitable for combat reenactment, LARP, stage or TV/film, this slim, fully wearable knight helmet is best suited for late medieval scenarios and ideal for completing a European warrior's armour. Of course, our T-faced barbute not only impresses with its combination of authenticity, safety and comfort, but is also a real eye-catcher that will make a great decorative addition to any helmet collector's treasure chamber.
