Roman Fulham Type Gladius with sheath, 1st .C., sword decoration

The gladius, the main weapon of the Roman legionaries from 3rd c. BC to the 3rd c. AD, has been used in many variations over the centuries. Primarily designed as a storage/stab gun, it was also quite effective at cutting or cutting. Eventually, this highly feared short sword was gradually replaced by the longest spatha during the mid/late Roman Empire.

This Roman short sword is a reconstruction of a 1st c of classic style. Fulham (or Mainz-Fulham) gladius type, named after an archaeological discovery from the early first century c. AD recovered from the Thames in Fulham (London) in 1883. The remains of the original - the iron blade with a broken, cuffless spike and the sheath, of which only the frame, the plate and the two bronze plates survived - are on display at the British Museum in London.

With its parallel, straight (or sometimes slightly "waist-to-waist" edges) and long point, the Fulham pattern is believed to be a type of transition between the types of Mainz and the later types of Pompeii. However, as Mainz and Fulham gladii were used simultaneously during the first half of the first century C., some historians consider Fulham a mere variation within the Mainz group.

The wide, straight double-edged blade of the Roman sword we offer here is forged in EN45 spring steel (untempered, unhardened). It has a diamond flat cross section and a long, pointed tip. The edges are not sharp and the complete blade post is screwed into the pommel (brass top nut). The handle is crafted from wood and features a built-in protective board made of brass.

This one-hand Fulham-style gladius comes complete with a brown wooden and leather hem with brass protection accessories (a neck band, three crossbands and a frame or side rail that extends from top to bottom and ends in a trim). The two upper bands are equipped with suspension rings in molten brass, which allow the wearer to carry his gládio in the Roman way.

Note that this sword is not a weapon ready for battle. It is designed as a collector's piece or decoration/display and is not suitable for combat reenactment. In addition to its quality as a collectible, it is also perfectly suited as support, for example to complete your fantasy.
