Viking Hewing spearhead, approx. 64 cm
The spear enjoyed great popularity in the Viking Era. The large number and variety of surviving examples led us to believe that spears were more commonly used than swords - for they were not only easier, but also much cheaper to make.
Although some Norse sagas suggest the existence of so-called so-called squeered spears (e.g., the saga of Njáls, an Icelandic saga of the 13th century in which the warrior Gunnar Hámundarson wields such a spear or atgeir), there is so far no archaeological evidence of this particular weapon. . Considering the lack of real surviving originals (or parts of them), any reconstruction is therefore solely based on interpretations of written sources from the high or even low Middle Ages and can just give an idea of how these rod guns might have been.
