Primarily developed as a powerful percussive device capable of crushing plate armor, this specific type of blunt weapon is sometimes called a Turkish apple. However, although in fact widely used by the Ottomans, it was also very popular throughout Eastern Europe, the Middle East and India. The varied forms ranged from minimalist and utilitarian shapes and patterns (usually used in combat) to elaborately adorned and elaborately crafted layouts (instead intended for ceremonial purposes or as a classification badge).
