The bascinet appeared in the early fourteenth century. It evolved from the so-called cervelliere or secret helmet (a simple cranial cap) and remained a popular helmet until the 15th century throughout Central Europe.

The medieval bascinet we offer here is based on the helmet seen on the famous bronze statue of Robert I of Scotland (1274-1329) in Bannockburn. A gambeson, also called an armored doublet or aceton, is almost indispensable for free and exhibition combat. In the late Middle Ages, gambeson was worn under plate chains and armor. It increased the wearing comfort of the knight's armor and was also able to absorb the blows of opponents and thus reduce the risk of injury.

This used-looking gambeson from Ulfberth is made of three layers of fabric: an outer layer of cotton fabric (canvas), a layer of polyester padding, and an inner lining of cotton. The vertical and diagonal padding secures the padding and increases the wearing comfort. Hand-sewn rings in the chest area give this gambeson an armored character. A patch, several hand-stitched details and a special wash give this gambeson a vintage character. The leather details and contrasting lining provide a beautiful contrast. For good wearing comfort, the sides and neckline are provided with nests.
