This pair of arm protectors is made of thick buffalo leather and tanned with vegetables (granules) and soft suede. The two layers of leather are sewn together with rustic-looking stitches. The surface and edges of the thick granulated leather were polished and received a light-colored finish, giving the leather a distinct used appearance. The middle section is engraved across the surface.

The Cross of Calatrava is a symbol used by the Order of Calatrava and the Order of Montesa (this one in black), as well as by the Order of Preachers. It consists of a Greek cross (formerly Latin) with four equal arms, gules and lysed   flower (with fleurs de lis at the ends of the arms). This cross appears on numerous shields and city flags   in the Calatrava Field.
In the Order of Calatrava, it was black until the 15th century, when it was red.
