The terms Damascus steel orwelded standard designate a composite steel forged from two or more different types of steel. It was named after his hometown, the Syrian city of Damascus, a former stronghold of stamped steel production. As a common practice, a harder high carbon steel and a softer low carbon steel are repeatedly welded and folded together. High carbon steel ensures greater hardness, better toughness and longer-lasting wire retention, while softer steel gives greater blade flexibility and tensile strength. This procedure, which arose at a time when the qualities of steel were often low and inconsistent, allows to combine the positive attributes of the various grades of steel. In addition, the different shades generated by the variable carbon content of alternating layers engender surprisingly beautiful patterns, such as the twisted motif called Standard Torsion Damascus or the Rose Damascus pattern. Undoubtedly, these unusual patterns partly explain why inherent magical properties were attributed to the Damascus steel blades of the Middle Ages. Such a damascena sword blade is, for example, described as a bloody worm or a poisonous snake in the Edda.
