Katana SHIRASAYA
Shirasaya refers to a special sword mount, which was formerly used for the gentle guard of the blade. Especially in peacetime, blades were optimally protected stored in it. Unvarnished magnolia wood absorbs moisture inside the sheath, carries it to the outside and therefore protects against rust. Many Shirasaya were provided with a "Sayagaki", an inscription, which gave information about the blacksmith, origin and rank. On the streets of Japan, discreet equipment without cable and protection, especially in the late nineteenth century, was used because at that time the Emperor forbade the carrying of samurai swords. The Shirasaya mount, which was similar to a wooden sword or wooden staff, was a clever way to use the sword without being noticed.
