The appearance and cut of this hood or gugel are based on an archaeological find dating between the 10th and 12th centuries. In 1936, a fully dressed swamp body was discovered on a farm in Skjoldehamn, Norway. Whether it was a woman or a man could not be clearly determined to this day. The characteristics of the hood found on the body are the pointed hem with a square piece inserted into the chest.

The standard of the gugel we offer here is mainly composed of rectangular panels. It is equipped with a small cord at the neck that allows individual adjustment. The gugel is used as a separate hood and covers only the shoulders. It is made of 100% cotton canvas and therefore is not waterproof. However, a certain water repellent effect can be achieved with a little waterproofing spray.

If you want to be historically accurate, the gugel did not belong, strictly speaking, to the time of the Vikings. Still, it is often used by men and women to complete their Viking atheament. This helmet is also a good addition to all other medieval costumes from start to top.
