The wakizashi being used along with the katana was the official sign that the user was a samurai or swordsman from feudal Japan. When used together, the pair of swords was called daisho, which literally translates as "big-little".

The wakizashi was one of several short swords available for use by the samurai, including both.

While the use of the katana was limited to the samurai class, wakizashi of legal length (ko-wakizashi) could be taken by the chonin class that included merchants. This was common on travel due to the risk of encountering bandits. Wakizashi were worn on the left side, attached to the waist band.
