The split neckline can be opened or closed with a fibula or brooch. The central and side gums (wedge-shaped pieces of fabric) inserted in the rectangular front and back panels give the skirt a suitable flare. The armpits are endorsed with gussets (square pieces of fabric). The strong canvas fabric becomes a sturdy and heavy dress that is therefore best suited for spring or autumn.

The cut of this dress is based on archaeological finds dating back to the 9th and 10th centuries.

These clothing patterns are clearly recognizable in fragments of fabrics and clothing found in Skjoldehamn, Birka and Hedeby. The dress is therefore ideal for an authentic portrait of a Viking woman.

The piece of Roman military equipment known as the cingulum militare was a leather belt adorned with ornamental metal plates and often fitted with frogs (hanging mounts) for the soldier's dagger. This war belt was not only used to hold the warrior's braccae (pants) during battle, but it was also a display of rank or military honors.

The cingulate was usually completed by a leather apron consisting of several flat straps (so-called pterygians or pteruges) hanging from the belt and decorated with continuous rows of riveted metal fittings. Each bracelet ended with metal pendants (pensilia).

The richly adorned Roman cingulate or balteus that we offer here is best suited for the late 1st century portrait of a legionary. The riveted rectangular belt plates (approx. 8.5 x 5 cm) are made of thin-leaf brass and engraved with alternating motifs of a human face and the famous Roman she-wolf or magnifying glass nursing the twins Romulus and Remus (recorded in Roman mythology as the founders of the city of Rome). The articulated buckle and pugio frogs are also made of brass.

The belt itself is made of sturdy 3mm leather. It has holes and is adjustable to a wide range of sizes. A leather cord for tying and attaching a dagger to the twin buds (pugio frogs) is included in delivery. The apron consists of 4 leather straps, each of which is adorned with a brass pendant and 8 brass medallions.
