Greek Xiphos, Hoplite Sword with Scabbard, Decorating Sword

The hoplites of Ancient Greece, the brave infantrymen best known for fighting in a phalanx formation and wielding a spear or spear (dory) and a large round shield (aspis or hoplon), are commonly depicted with a secondary weapon at their side. One of these battlefield side weapons, a straight, relatively short sword with a sheet-shaped double-edged blade called xifhos, was quite popular among the Greek armies (among others, the notorious Spartans). Designed to cut and push, it was mainly used by the infantry as a reserve weapon for close-range combat or when the spear had been broken, lost, or snatched in the fray.

Although surviving examples are extremely scarce, historical illustrations can be found in many ancient Greek works of art, especially in pottery paintings that stood the test of time.

This beautiful reconstruction of a hoplite sword is shaped like a leaf blade that is so distinct from the classic 6th-5th c. BC Xiphoi. The EN45 spring steel blade, without temperament/unhardened, is initially "waist" just below the wide heel and gradually increases before tapered back to the point. The edges are not sharp. The authentically shaped handle consists of a wooden apple with steel cover, a steel guard and a wood handle riveted on a thick steel spike.

The Greek short one-hand sword we offer here comes complete with a wooden sheath bound in red leather. The characteristic throat and chape are also made of wood. Brass suspension rings attached to the hem with leather straps allow the wearer to carry his xiphos hanging in a bald in true Greek fashion.

Note that this sword is not a weapon ready for battle. It is designed as a collector's piece or decoration/display and is not suitable for combat reenactment. In addition to its quality as a collectible, it is also perfectly suited as support, for example to complete your fantasy.
