In the 12th century, the knights quickly realized that with the new double-boom technique becoming more widespread, having additional protection for the face was a must, as most spear blows going over the shield would instantly kill a rider wearing the old nasal helmet style. At first, they added a front plate to provide additional protection against all attacks from the front, proving remarkably effective against enemy archers and mounted opponents.
